Ceilidh Briscoe

Eighteen year old Ceilidh Briscoe, has been playing the violin since the age of five. She studies via the internet and in person, with Brian Conway (www.brianconway.com). Mr. Conway is a five time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, and was voted the Best Traditional Artist for 2008 by U.S. Based Echo Magazine. She started her fiddle studies with renowned Victoria folk-fiddlers Calvin Cairns and Daniel Lapp, and was a member of the B.C. Fiddle Orchestra and Conservatory Fiddles for a number of years. Ceilidh has competed in the North American qualifier for the All-Ireland Music Championships, in New York, on three separate occasions. Each time she has succeeded in taking first place in the Open and Slow Air categories, securing her ability to compete in the Fleadh Cheoil in Ireland. She returned from the competition in Tullamore, Ireland in 2009, an All-Ireland Fiddle Champion in her own right. She is the first junior Canadian fiddler to earn such a distinction. Ceilidh studies the lyrical Sligo style of fiddling, and exhibits a musical maturity and command of the instrument rarely found in an artist of her age. She represents the third generation of Briscoe fiddlers. Ceilidh also studies classical violin with the Head of Strings at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Michael van der Sloot. She plays in the first violin section of the University of Victoria Orchestra, is the Principal Second Violin in the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, and is a member of the Collegium Program at the VCM. She completed her Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music examinations in 2010, and passed with First Class Honours.
