About the Victoria Fiddle Society

The mandate of The Victoria Fiddle Society is to establish and maintain a fiddle community for anyone interested in fiddle music in the Victoria region. We believe that a unified body will create a healthy, vital atmosphere that will benefit students, professionals, music enthusiasts and subsequently the entire community.

In order for us to build relationships among each other, we must first establish a common place to congregate. In keeping with the times, we have created a ‘virtual kitchen party’ at this website, which is dedicated to the pursuit of the VFS mandate.  The VFS website is our home base and the soul of our fiddling community.  As our online relationships grow, they will flow outwards into the rest of the community.  In addition, our society will actively promote fiddle music in the community through workshops and events and by bringing people of all ages together to enjoy fiddle music.

The Victoria Fiddle Society awards four bursaries every year.  Originally called the Fiddler to Fiddler Award, and renamed The VFS Bursary in 2007, this award has grown from a single recipient in 2003 to three $250 awards in 2005.  In 2007, we added another, special award – The Spirit Award – given, at the discretion of the Bursary Committee, to an applicant in any of the three categories, who stands out.

The Victoria Fiddle Society participates in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival held in the spring of each year by offering a variety of awards.

  • The Frankie Rodgers Trophy & Award (best original composition)
  • The Oliver Schroer Award (In his lifetime, the playing and teaching of fiddler Oliver Schroer encapsulated the spirit, magic and beauty of traditional and contemporary fiddle tunes). With this award, the VFS would like to acknowledge a performer who embodies the spirit of fiddle music regardless of their age, style or ability.
