Oliver Swain, a Juno and WCMA nominated Americana and Folk-Noir musician from Victoria, BC who spent a dozen years in some of North Americas most loved roots bands (Outlaw Social, The Duhks, The Bills) before releasing ‘In a BIG MACHINE’ in 2011 to rave reviews.

Oliver spent many years in Louisiana and Appalachia discovering the roots of American music for himself where he studied voice with Ginny Hawker and Tracy Swarts. Now residing in Victoria where frequent solo journeys into the rugged BC wilderness fuel his original take on traditional singing styles. Oliver’s live show has attracted a lot of attention over the last year including that of Tamara Kater, Executive Director of Folk Music Canada.

Classes:

Workshop 1:  Songs (Celtic) – Every song is unique and demands a unique approach. From following the narrative to experimenting with genre, great vocalists seem to know exactly when to insert that ornament or hit the high notes and hushed tones. Oliver will guide the class through the performance of a few simple folk songs.

Workshop 2:  Improv – All music is improv. Through rehearsal and practice we can simplify the improv process but in the end we must make it happen every time. Oliver will lead the class through some improv exercises aimed at discovering ones own voice and the playful exchange that can come when no one knows what is going to happen next.

Workshop 3:  Southern Harmony – This will be a general look at the principles of harmony singing and some specifics about how to find your part and sing together in a group setting.

Workshop 4:  Songs (Appalachian) – Every song is unique and demands a unique approach.
